Iconic Africa is proudly South African, proud of our heritage, our people and our wilderness.
On Sunday, the 31st May the 90th Comrades marathon will be run. This gruelling 87km run is known as the “Ultimate Human Race,” it is an event of great stature and is steeped in history. The Comrades Marathon is the world’s oldest and largest ultra marathon run over a distance of approximately 90 km between Pietermaritzburg, and Durban.
Vic Clapham, an ex-soldier of World War 1, founded the Comrades Marathon in 1921 as a tribute to lost comrades. The greatest thing about the Comrades, even today, is the fellowship and the camaraderie that comes with it. No matter where you come from, no matter who you are, everyone lines up as equals. Side by side, the runners are all in it together, helping each other, all shapes, sizes, colours, and ages… united together with one goal!
There is no greater event in South Africa that unites people like this and when the National Anthem Sounds at 4:30am and Chariots of Fire booms out of the loudspeakers, the runners will sing and dance there won’t be a dry eye in the crowd. It is most definitely one for the #bucketlist!
Proud, determined and united together to face arguably one of the world’s toughest challenges, 22369 runners from all over the world will line up at the start-line. One race, one goal, one nation.
Iconic Africa pays tribute to all these runners. Good luck and god speed!
