The Silo
Cape TownResting in the heart of the Mother City, you will find the extraordinary Silo Hotel. This is your chance to stay in one of the most unique hotels in the world. Once a fully functioning grain silo, this gorgeous, newly converted hotel lets guests admire all of Cape Town’s beauty from a great height while still feeling as though they are a part of the hustle and bustle of the city that lies below. The hotel is remarkable in every sense, it boasts panoramic views of Cape Town like no other hotel in the city, showcases cutting edge décor and design and promises the very best in South African hospitality.
Admire the extraordinary architecture and history of The Silo
To be able to fully understand how outstanding The Silo is, one needs to understand its history. In its previous life, The Silo used to be a grain silo. The grain silo was established in 1924 and at that time, it was the tallest building in the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2001, the grain silo closed its doors after playing a huge part in South Africa’s industrial and agricultural industry. Architect, Thomas Heatherwick had a dream to transform the old silo into the grandiose hotel that it is today. The elevator tower has been reconstructed into The Silo Hotel, and the actual silos will be converted into the modish modern art gallery—the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The building has kept its original form to pay tribute to its historical and cultural significance and to stay true to Cape Town’s distinct skyline. The only major change to the exterior of the hotel has been the addition of spectacularly extraordinary glass windows—you see, the windows aren’t just any old windows; these particular windows have been designed to protrude outwards as though they have been slightly inflated. At night, this outstanding design transforms the hotel into an eye-catching beacon that radiates warm light over the exquisite harbour below.
Enjoy being at the heart of Cape Town in style
What makes The Silo even more outstanding is the fact that it is located in the absolute centre of Cape Town, towering above the iconic V&A Waterfront. This means that guests get to stay at South Africa’s cultural hub and that they can experience the true essence of the colourful and vibrant city that is Cape Town. The hotel perfectly complements its surroundings. Guests can admire the breath-taking views of the majestic mountains and the picturesque beaches, and will feel as though they have been transported into the heart of diversity and contrast. The exterior of the hotel has stayed true to its original industrial look but the interior perfectly juxtaposes the industrial look with its vivid colours and its brightly coloured, eclectic pieces—the ideal combination of quirky and classy. The hotel comprises 28 rooms with seven different room categories. The one bedroom penthouse is The Silo’s gem. It rests at the top of The Silo and looks out over Table Mountain as well as the harbour and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. It has its own private study area and dining room that can seat ten guests—perfect for entertaining! Not to mention the absolutely spectacular views of Table Mountain.
The Silo is also ideal for families. The hotel boasts four Family Suites and each suite has two bedrooms, both beautifully decorated with brilliant colours and unique pieces. But, if you’re looking for your own little retreat, you can always stay in one of the four Silo Rooms that overlook the working harbour below, and each one has its own balcony for you to step out and unwind on.
Treat yourself to the novel silo experiences
Because The Silo is so centrally located, this means that it is the perfect base for anyone who wishes to explore the city. But, you don’t even need to leave the comfort of the hotel to keep yourself amused. Why not take some time out and spend an afternoon in The Silo Spa? The Spa has expert therapists who are committed to helping their guests relax. You can treat yourself to a mani and a pedi, or pop into the sauna and feel the stress melt away. After your spa treatment, wander up to The Silo Rooftop for a fine-dining experience—a true taste of Africa that features seasonal and local ingredients. You can order lovely, healthy snacks from the raw bar while you soak up the sun on the deck or just gaze out at the 360degree view while the fiery African sun sets over the Atlantic.
