Duba Plains: the Water Cats

The renowned Duba Plains Camp sits at the the northern edge heart of the Okavango Delta, on a permanent channel, ensuring year-round water access.
A matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland, the 33 000-hectare private reserve is typical of the region’s unique landscape, and is brimming with wildlife uniquely adapted to take advantage of the the specific habitat.

Duba Plains Camp offers five bespoke suites, in addition to a separate 2-bedroom suite aptly named the Duba Plains Suite, all designed by Dereck Joubert to blend into the riverine forest and to take advantage of the shapes and textures of the shade but also to evoke the old classic African safari style of the 1920’s. It is a wildlife connoisseur’s getaway with literally thousands of animals in an almost endless pattern across the flood plains. Elephants splash their way through the papyrus whilst lechwe feed in the shallows nearby, and the ever-present lions criss-cross the channels, looking for their next meal.

All the rooms are raised on recycled railway sleeper decking and offer guests amazing views of the surrounding floodplain and the steady stream of animals parading past. The camp is very active, with elephants visiting almost daily, banded mongooses feeding along the pathways, baboons frolicking in the trees, and the local warthog population rummaging under the rooms for the freshest roots and grass.

Each suite has an indoor lounge area and beautifully appointed en-suite facilities: a flush loo, double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers, and a luxurious bath. Ceiling fans and an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system over the bed ensure a comfortable climate.

Relax on your private veranda, complete with a private swimming pool and shaded sala, whilst enjoying stunning views of the surrounds.

A professional camera and selection of lenses are available in your suite for your complimentary use. High-quality binoculars are provided with each room; very handy for viewing the multitude of colourful bird species which abound around the reserve (roughly 200 species have been recorded here).

At the end of your safari stay at Duba Plains, your wildlife images and video footage from the camera provided is downloaded as their gift to you to take home.

The camp’s open-vehicle safari drives, guided bush walks, traditional canoes (mokoros), and boating offer guests superb opportunities to track and view iconic African wildlife, enjoy bird-watching moments, and participate in other bespoke viewing activities. These safari viewing experiences are designed to put you in front of the best wildlife the area offers.

Duba Plains is truly a land of variety. Made famous in the documentary Relentless Enemies, documenting the rivalry between the local lion and buffalo population, it is a place where one can see utterly unique behaviour. During the times of the Okavango’s annual inundation – June through September – any lions you encounter are more than likely going to be wading across a channel at some point in the game drive, allowing for unrivalled photographic opportunities.

If a plethora of wildlife is what you are after, based out of a luxurious camp that itself feels wild, Duba is for you…
