When one thinks of Africa…lions, leopards and elephants come to mind. However, the continent is also home to the most incredible sea life which is equally as worthy of your bucket-list.
The Western Cape specifically, is one of the most amazing destinations for watching marine mammals as it boasts hordes of dolphins and rare yearly visits from various whale species.
Southern right and humpback whales migrate yearly from Antarctica to warmer waters, reaching South Africa in June. The best time to visit and make sure you get an exquisite viewing is from June to November on the Western Cape coast, a major breeding ground. Peak calving season is July and August, but whales can be seen through September and October. The country’s coastal waters teem with these magnificent mammals and you can sit for hours watching them elegantly frolicking and nursing their young.
Hermanus on the Cape south coast is known as the best land-based whale-watching destination in the world. The breath-taking views, winding cliff-top paths, decadent eateries and wonderful wineries are also great reasons to put the vibrant seaside town on your bucket list!
Why not visit on the 2-4th October for the annual Hermanus Whale Festival. Now in its 23rd year as the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa putting the creatures of the deep in the spotlight alongside top performers and musicians.
