Little Mombo
BotswanaLittle Mombo is just three spacious and grandly appointed private suites raised above the wilderness that is Mombo Island – an plentiful gem of the Okavango Delta that boasts some of the best big game viewing in all of Africa. This is true isolated wilderness served up in exclusive and splendid luxury, fantastic service and a genuine Wilderness Safaris commitment to conservation and green ecotourism.
Phenomenal wildlife experience
The wildlife at Mombo is enjoyed on morning and afternoon game drives, although when the weather allows, full days out in the wild with a picnic are a real treat. Legadima, a leopardess made famous by the epic National Geographic film The Eye of the Leopard, remains the star of the Mombo show although her confiding offspring are equally photogenic. The large lion prides offer regular sightings as they hunt the huge herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala, lechwe and buffalo. Cheetah and spotted hyaena are other two major predators of the Mombo concession and both are consistent features on game drive.
For the seasoned traveller, the Okavango delta offers a plethora of less conspicuous but no less fascinating wildlife including 400 species of bird, a huge variety of frogs and a unique diversity of trees and flowers. The hide is an excellent place to view and photograph these creatures in silence and tranquillity.
Extravagant seclusion and romance
Little Mombo’s three extravagant suites are all nestled in the shade of some verdant old giants. Each suite, suspended above the delta on wooden decking, centres on a generous king-size bedroom. To the one side is the bathroom with double vanities and secluded outdoor shower with a view of the wilds beyond, to the other is an inviting sitting room where you could lounge with your favourite sundowner as the nocturnal animals of the African night begin their chorus.
Outside, you might like to indulge in a romantic dinner on your veranda bathed in golden lantern light or unwind with a luxurious massage treatment under your sala – cloistered by the palms and trees of the delta.
The suites are linked to each other and the gorgeous living area by raised decking which allows the prolific Okavango wildlife to pass by unimpeded. That said, it is not unusual to find a lion or leopard resting on a deck in the middle of the day. While you are waiting for a lazy cat to clear the path to your room, you could be lounging in the gentle coolness of the pool while a herd of buffalo graze slowly past in the floodplain below. Alternatively, you might indulge in a cocktail from the comfort of the alluring lounge.
For the more energetic, there is an open air gym for you to work off the joys of the scrumptious cuisine.
Authentic conservation
While you stay at Little Mombo in sublime luxury, you can do so safe in the knowledge that the camp is solar powered, waste water is treated above ground and that your rate is contributing to rhino re-introduction, lion research, elephant monitoring and various other conservation projects of crucial conservation significance.
Travelling to Little Mombo Camp
Your first point of call is the little town of Maun, serviced daily from Johannesburg, Windhoek and Kasane. From there, you will experience a true delight – a low-level flight over the delta in a light aircraft. There is no better way to take in the extent of the watery wonderland that is the Okavango. From the Mombo airstrip, it is a short game drive to the camp.
Why stop here?
Iconic Africa believes that southern Africa is one of the most diverse and exciting places on earth so we suggest you combine your Little Mombo trip with three other destinations. We think your itinerary should start in the Cape – either in the beautiful city of Cape Town with its mountain, gourmet restaurants and epic beaches or in the tranquil luxury of the wine lands. After Little Mombo, the grandeur and exuberance of the Victoria Falls is an inspiring destination. Rounding off your holiday with a Kruger experience at one of the exclusive Sabi Sands lodges is an excellent idea.
