The area is watered by the luscious tree-lined Mara River and one of its tributaries, the Talek. On the western border is the gracious Oloololo Escarpment, which towers over the reserves highest magnificent concentrations of plains game.
Wherever you go in the Mara, the one certain thing is that you’ll see an astonishing amount of game, often in one place at one time. This exquisite ecosystem boasts one of the highest densities of animals in the world with 95 mammal species and 570 bird species recorded. You may think you’ve seen it all, but I can guarantee you that a visit to the Masai Mara is the safari of a lifetime. From the mating habits of lions, to the displaying characteristics of the crowned cranes, to the quirky behaviour of the male wildebeest, to the idiosyncrasies of the local Maasai people… there are so many wonders to take in.
All year round, the Big Five may be viewed and often more than one at a time! Lion are found in large prides, cheetah and leopard are harder to spot but when they are, they are often hunting. Therefore there are many an awe- inspiring, nail-biting, unforgettable sightings to be had! Elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and hippo are also prevalent as are the odd rare Rhino. Antelope include Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi and so many more.
Home to the miracle of the Great Migration
The great wildebeest migration is Africa at its best, nature showing off and certainly something every human should witness. It’s a spectacle that if you are lucky enough to experience will remain in your memory forever. It’s unpredictable which it makes it even more exciting! Millions of these ungainly beasts move North from the Serengeti in July, in search of rain-ripened grass before turning South again in October. The arrival of the herds and the accompanying topis, zebra, eland and impala is a sight to be remembered as is the thrill of watching these creatures attempting to cross the perilous, mighty Mara River.
