Little Vumbura
BotswanaLittle Vumbura is a perfect private island in the patchwork water wonderland of the northern Okavango Delta. The six glamorous tents, shaded by a thick Okavango forest, offer ultimate seclusion on raised decking suspended over the pristine waters. Four hundred bird species, myriad frogs and wading elephant bulls will be your companions while you find sweet repose. From the island you will explore the life-giving waters of the Okavango in dugout canoes and boats while the islands and their iconic African wildlife are discovered on foot or on game drive.
Open-sided panoramic luxury
The open-sided main lounge, dining room and sala are raised on expansive decking and exemplify tasteful spaces of repose. Decorated in the colours of the Okavango – blue, beige, khaki and gold, they offer you endless diverse views of the Okavango’s delights. The pool is the best way to linger in the midday heat, a cocktail at your side and the birds flitting below. The star deck is an incredible place to sip on your favourite night-cap and while sharing stories around the fire under the African stars.
The six completely private tented suites are a testament to the beauty of the ancient trees under which they nestle. The generous bedroom is joined to a restful lounge complete with a deck and ample storage space. Sliding glass doors open onto a deck cloistered by the reeds and trees with a shaded seating area and outside shower. Your deck is a wonderful place to enjoy a private sundowner and romantic dinner as the Botswana night slowly envelops you in its comforting, ancient balm.
Abundant channel and island life
Little Vumbura offers the chance to see all of Africa’s iconic wildlife from the land or from the water. While you push through the narrow channels in a mokoro dugout canoe, you can marvel as jacanas hop over the pastel lilies and painted reed frogs hang in the reeds like little Okavango jewels. When the waters open to wider channels, giraffe, herds of buffalo, elephant bulls and large herds of plains game will delight as they graze and browse on the island shores.
Game drives on the drier parts of the concession offer the chance to spend time with the Golden Pack – a pack of endangered wild dogs famed for their gorgeous golden pelages. Also in the long grass, Little Vumbura offers some of the best sable antelope viewing in Botswana – the sight of one of these great, black, scimitar-horned bulls will leave you astounded.
The African dusk is best enjoyed with a gin and tonic from the deck of a flat-bottomed boat, the hippos grunting contentedly in their pods while the ginger light of the sunset fills you with complete tranquillity.
At night, a spot lit drive back to the camp might reveal the flash of a leopard’s coat as she disappears into the darkness to hunt.
