Wanderlust… it’s a thing

“It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.” Anthony Bourdain

Wanderlust. Defined in the dictionary as: a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about… is a thing many of us battle with. But why? It should be a positive thing. Here’s a little something that will help feed that wanderlust inside of you… and perhaps get you dreaming a little more too! Presenting the best #luxurymoments that #Mozambique #Botswana #Zambia and of course #South Africa have to offer.

Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls

Just because you’re in the bush it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a beautiful, healthy breakfast. And one of my favourite ways to make sure that happens is to plan ahead, and then take food out on the road in pretty little cups or glass jars, just like with these endlessly creamy and delicious Quinoa Breakfast Cups. Also, the recipe works just as well with a few favourite African grain varieties to replace the quinoa. Sorghum and millet are two of my favourite gluten-free options, both giving lots of light fluffiness, and making a perfect blank canvas for the coconut milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Top with mixed roasted nuts or your favourite granola and you’ll have a shiny start to the day indeed.

Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls
Serves 4 | Preparation time 10 minutes | Cooking time 15–20 minutes

Screen-Shot-2015-10-27-at-4.46.12-PM-500x323

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1 cup quinoa (or millet or oats)
1 cup water
1 cup milk, almond milk or coconut milk
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 vanilla pod, sliced length ways
1 cup natural yoghurt or coconut cream
2-3 fresh plums, sliced (or any stone fruit)
½ cup mixed roasted nuts
4 tsp honey or alternative healthy sugar, for serving
Coconut shavings, for serving
Fresh strawberries, for serving

Screen-Shot-2015-11-23-at-5.05.46-PM-500x436

WHAT TO DO
1. Cook the quinoa with the water, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a medium sized saucepan, bring to the boil then simmer for about 15 minutes until cooked. Add a little hot water as it cooks if you find that it becomes too thick, although you are looking for a porridgy consistency.

  1. Lightly toast the coconut shavings in a dry pan over medium heat.
  2. When the quinoa is cooked, layer your breakfast into small glass jars or bowls, dividing and layering the above remaining ingredients between them.

Botswana – When to go?

Botswana, despite its incredible reputation as a premier wildlife destination is also an untouched wilderness of unbelievable diversity. There is no best time to go to Botswana – anytime is excellent. That said, there are a number of factors to consider when planning a Botswana safari depending on what it is you are looking for.

Selinda Camp Selinda Spillway Botswana Safari

The annual floodwaters of the Okavango Delta begin to rise in May (early winter) peaking in July and then receding again until the end of August. The weather is cooler during this period with nighttime temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing while midday is generally balmy. This is the best time of the year for water-based activities such as riding mokoros and boating through the endless channels. Vegetation is sparse making it easier to view the game and the lack of water ensures that the herds congregate at the riverside and waterholes. Game drives can be limited in the water-based camps but this is more than made up for by the water activities.

Selinda Camp Botswana Wild Dogs

The summer months (November to March) constitute the rainy season and temperatures can reach peaks of 35 degrees Celsius. Rain is delivered in spectacular afternoon thunderstorms. This is the time when the migrant birds are resident and extensive game drives are possible. The bushveld transforms into a hive of activity for predators and young herbivores alike and a lush green hue embraces the landscape. Some camps have limited water activities at this time of year. Find out more detail per region below.

Recommendations by Region:

The Okavango Delta

A magical wonderland at the heart of the Kalahari, the Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most prolific wildlife destinations. The waterways overflow with hippos and crocodiles while herds of antelope and elephant graze the rich floodplains.

Dry Winter Season (May to October)- This is an advisable time for water activities and the best time to see the hippo, elephant, buffalo and plethora of other game that call the verdant banks home.

Rainy Season (November to March)– Although game viewing is still good it’s not as great as in winter as the bush is very lush and thick. Take care; as you may get rained on during game drives at this time of year!

Canoeing Selinda Explorers Camp

The Savuti Region (within the Chobe National Park)

Savuti is situated in the South of Chobe National Park. It’s famous for its quantity and quality of wildlife as well as its jaw-dropping predator sightings.

Dry Winter Season (May to October)- The dry winter months ensure the best possible game viewing and predator sightings.

Rainy Season (November to March) – The rainy season is green and beautiful promising fantastic bird watching and maybe even a sighting of the phenomenal zebra migration.

Vumbura-Plains-Iconic-Africa-Fireside

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is truly unique area surrounding a large portion of the Okavango Delta and its patchwork of waterways, islands, grasslands and woodlands.

Dry Winter Season (May to October)- The weather is pleasant, mild and dry, the Okavango Delta is in flood and game viewing is brilliant at this time of year.

Rainy Season (November to March) – As the rains approach so do the stunning migrant birds and imminent birthing of lambs and foals.

Zarafa-CAmp-Iconic-Africa-Deck-Banner

Linyanti Region

Just west of Chobe National Park lies the woodlands and wetlands of the remote Linyanti Region. This is the ultimate in big game wilderness with dry season herds and predators to rival anything you’ll find elsewhere in Botswana.

Dry Winter Season (May to October) – Game viewing is best at this time due to the sparse vegetation and lack of water.

Rainy Season (November-March) – There is still lots of game but it’s sometimes difficult to see due to the lush vegetation.

Whatever time of year you choose to visit magical Botswana you are assured the ultimate African safari and most probably the best game viewing you have ever… or will ever see!

Terri’s Trip to Beautiful Botswana

Our very own Terri Abadi was treated to a magical Botswanan experience. We sat down with her briefly to get the rundown on what she thought of it all. As always she took tons of photos and has kindly shared some of them with us. Here’s what she had to say:

Where did you go in Botswana?

Terri: “I went to a couple of the Wilderness Camps ranging from the classic to the premier camps namely Chitabe, Vumbura Plains, Duma Tau and Kings Camp.”

Leopard_With_Kill

Which was your favourite Camp and why?

Terri: “It’s very difficult to say as each camp had its own special brand of magic and each was special in its very own way. Vumbura camp was spectacular; the rooms were spacious and beyond compare offering contemporary African Eco-chic rooms with beautiful views across the flood plains. It offers both water and land excursions as well as walks, so a very varied wildlife experience. Perhaps spotting a pride of lions from my room and later witnessing them eating a kill less than 50 meters from our room made this place indescribable, certainly, a story that I will share around many a campfire!”

Elephant_Aerial

What made it different from South African lodges?

Terri: “Game viewing in Botswana is enjoyed on both land and water year-round and there’s always an abundance of elephants all over.”

Elephant_Herd

Was it difficult to get to?

Terri: “Not at all there are direct flights to Maun and Wilderness flights to the various lodges.”

What were the Botswanan people like?

Terri: “Very friendly and warm. They were very proud and patriotic of their Botswanan heritage and country and very grateful when people visited and they could share it.”

Elephant_Water

What was your most favourite meal/drink of the trip?

Terri: “The welcome drink was always a refreshing delight especially in the heat!”

What is your fondest memory?

Terri: “I missed the early game drive but had the best sighting of lions in the camp and had this all to myself!

Lechwe

What is your favourite thing about the Botswanan landscape?

Terri: “The vastness of the pristine environment, the colours of the ever-changing landscapes, spectacular wildlife, a real natural wonder. It is honestly something you have to witness to truly appreciate.”

Did you do any fun activities?

Terri: “Mokoro boating.”

Leopard_Reeds

What was your best sighting?

Terri: “Wild dogs hunting.”

Give one tip for future travellers to Botswana?

Terri: “Pack light and in a duffel bag.”

What did you love most about the trip?

Terri: “The game viewing.”

What would you say is the Botswanan game changer?

Terri: “The abundance of wildlife and the remoteness of the areas. It is completely untouched.”

Top Ten Reasons to Visit Beautiful Botswana

Botswana really is the pride of Africa – a country that after 50 years of independence has enjoyed economic and political stability. Although it is completely landlocked – its two big rivers, the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River serve as a boundary to an abundance of wildlife. It is most definitely the place to go if you want to see The Big Five!

Beautiful Botswana has been home to some incredible award-winning documentaries i.e. Lakadema “Eye of the Leopard,”, The Last Lions, Lions of Darkness as well as unique African literature in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, all which have helped to put it on the map!

Below we have compiled our top ten reasons as to why you have to visit this exquisite country:

bots-banner-05

The Delta                                                                                                                                                                                 The Okavango delta also known as the “Jewel of the Kalahari” is the world’s largest inland Delta at approximately 15000 square kilometres. This tranquil haven is home to a magnitude of lush plants and a staggering array of wildlife and birds.

Beautiful Botswana Duba Banner

Chobe                                                                                                                                                                                             A magical place, home to Africa’s largest Elephant population. Cruise down the river at sunset and marvel at the lavish vegetation, vibrant birdlife and infinite animals.

Easily Accessible                                                                                                                                                                       By road or air!

Game boating                                                                                                                                                                         One of the few places left in Africa that you can go on safari and get up close and personal with wildlife in an old-fashioned houseboat, speedboat or canoe.

Migrations                                                                                                                                                                                     Yearly Zebra and Antelope migrations are a real spectacle to witness. An encounter you will never forget and definitely something for the bucket list.

Not Too Many Tourists                                                                                                                                                      Few safari lodges and a low impact tourist policy meant that the country has not been overrun by tourists. Most of the safari lodges are small (and often) luxurious providing a very intimate, authentic experience.

Beautiful Botswana Zarafa Banner

Desert                                                                                                                                                                                           A unique semi-desert of approximately 50 000 square kilometres, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, is the Botswana’s largest reserve. Stark and arid its beauty is certainly is one of a kind.

Stunning landscapes                                                                                                                                                     Breath-taking landscapes, untouched wilderness and an extraordinary collection of wildlife will have you never wanting to leave.

Committed to conservation                                                                                                                                    Botswana is a true pioneer in ecotourism and is wholly committed to wildlife and nature conservation.

Lovely People                                                                                                                                                                              The people are truly amazing. Respectful, warm and considerate. You feel instantly at home amongst them!

Iconic Africa – the Who, How, Where and Why?

Every African tale has its beginning, a seed which over time has germinated into something supremely special.

Iconic Africa was merely a dream on a beautiful evening game drive, at the exquisite Londolozi Private Game Reserve. The game ranger, “John” and guest “Terri” had got on swimmingly and both shared an innate passion for the African wilderness. They both yearned to share this incredible infatuation and craved to inspire others to come and experience the beauty of Africa.

Terri Abadi’s uncontainable enthusiasm for Africa – Africa’s wildlife, Africa’s people and Africa’s wild spaces – borders on obsessive. Terri’s favourite way to spend the summer months is on safari with her husband and four children, which she does regularly all the way from Atlanta.

Terri Abadi

John Holley grew up in Africa. His fervour for conservation and travel was ignited by a childhood spent at the continent’s wilderness hotspots. As a student John spent every minute he could in the wild – travelling and working as a horse safari guide in Kenya. He began his professional career by completing his chartered accountancy for global financial services firm KPMG. Eventually, however, the call of the African wilderness pulled him away from corporate life and off to Londolozi where he worked as a game ranger for two years.

John Holley

It was here that one day… on another glorious game drive as the sun was setting on a bright crimson horizon, the stars aligned and Iconic Africa was born. John recalls how during Terri’s stay the Londolozi wilderness truly showed off! Each game drive produced life long memories. John and his tracker Richard Siwela laughed as they couldn’t put a foot wrong! Those who have spent a great deal of time in the bush, know this as “bush karma”. It was this incredible game viewing and endless memories which stimulated a life-long friendship and inspired game ranger and guest to start a new adventure. They have formed a compelling partnership with John’s affable charm and knowledge of wildlife, perfectly complimenting Terri’s love, enthusiasm and desire to get her feet rooted firmly in the African soil.

Picture taken by John Holley on that first game drive.

Founded by Terri (based in Atlanta, Georgia) in 2013, Iconic Africa is a labour of love designed to entice global travellers to African destinations that have inspired her over a lifetime of travel to our great continent. She has personally visited every destination that Iconic Africa recommends and used this extensive luxury travel experience to mould Iconic Africa into one of the leading bespoke travel agencies for exclusive, luxury and adventure African safaris and expeditions.

In December of 2014, Terri and John joined forces to transform a traditional travel agency into a world-beating online travel platform. To showcase the Iconic African destinations which best represent Iconic Africa’s values of opulent luxury, world-beating African hospitality, delectable contemporary cuisine and most importantly an authentic commitment to wilderness conservation.

Iconic Africa creates exclusive luxury African safari and adventure holidays for couples and families to southern and eastern Africa. Our gorgeous destinations are all handpicked and visited by Terri and John and include: the sophistication of Cape Town, the glorious Cape Winelands of the Franschhoek Valley, the tumultuous Atlantic coastal retreat of Hermanus, the most stylish safaris of the Kruger National Park, the emerald mosaic and epic wildlife of the Okavango Delta and Selinda Game Reserve, the adventure and majesty of the Victoria Falls, the last tropical island refuges floating in the cobalt blue of Mozambique and the urban fascination and history of Johannesburg – economic hub of the African continent

A vital aspect of Iconic Africa’s philosophy is that the destinations we represent must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the conservation of Africa’s last great wilderness areas and the rural people who live around them. Terri and John have both personally been extensively involved in education and poverty alleviation in rural Africa.

Long before Terri involved herself in the luxury travel and safari industry, she owned two successful American fashion companies which she used as leverage to build an export business that shipped innovative children’s products back to South Africa.

John’s vision and fervour for the development of Africa’s people began with the Madlala Cluster Learning Centre in a village bordering the Kruger National Park. John helped to start this rural centre for African learning excellence in a village while working at Londolozi, still growing from strength to strength under the Good Work Foundation.
