A Honeymoon in Pictures

Our recent travellers, Bastien and Gabs Le Coz have just returned home from their incredible African honeymoon. The couple had a fantastic time at Londolozi and Benguerra Island and have been kind enough to share their exquisite photos with us. Thank you Bastien and Gabs for sharing, we are so glad you had a lovely trip and we can’t wait to have you back on African soil again soon.

“We had an absolutely fantastic time in Londolozi. We dropped a line to the team there to thank them for creating such an amazing global experience. We were really impressed by the quality of the rangers, the food and the decor of the lodges. They did many things to make things even nicer to us like a lunch at the Tree House and a romantic diner in the room. That was perfect!” Bastien Le Coz.

Africa’s Greatest Ocean Safari

When you hear the word “safari” you immediately think of the Masai Mara, the Serengeti or the Kruger National Park. However, the official dictionary definition of the word “safari” is “an expedition to observe or hunt animals in their natural habitat.”So why not explore the offshore wonders of the Indian Ocean from White Pearl, Mozambique – where a somewhat different but equally  magical adventure awaits?

“The highlight for me is the swimming with dolphins and whales which really is exceptional! This is really is Africa’s greatest Ocean Safari,” says John Holley commenting on a recent trip to White Pearl. “White Pearl is definitely the best value Island retreat we have available. The rooms are designed in a Singita Sweni style and have amazing sea views. A personal butler over sees your every move. And it’s even more accessible now as there is a direct flight from the Kruger.”

For just a quick taste on the wonders that await at White Pearl click here.

Set on two kilometres of magnificent, pristine Mozambican coastline, White Pearl is an intimate resort for the discerning traveller. Couples or families will revel in the luxury, hospitality, delightful cuisine and natural wonder of this beach paradise. Whether you want to adventure on or under the cobalt Indian Ocean, lounge on the beach, sip cocktails in the pool or simply soak up the soothing peace of the sea, White Pearl, Ponta Mamoli offers the ultimate luxury beach holiday. However should you seek boutique natural marine experiences there can be no match for this rare outpost.

Rising from the dunes

The main areas at White Pearl seem to rise seamlessly out of the earth. The décor is fresh, white, blue and light earth tones. You could read in the sumptuous comfort of the Beach Bar while you sip on a delicious cocktail, the sea crashing outside. For solar therapy, you could lie on one of the over-sized day beds that line the expansive decking next to the huge infinity pool. When you need to cool down you can simply roll into the crystal pool or wander down the healing waters of the Indian Ocean.

wetu-whitepearl-1-36-1920x810

wp3

When the weather closes in or the heat becomes a little too much, you might like to retire to the gentle comfort of the lounge where coffee table books, soft sofas and panoramic views of the ocean await.

wp9

Panoramas of cobalt blue

There are 21 beautiful, private and simplistically opulent suites at White Pearl. Six of these open seamlessly onto private beaches while the others are raised above on stilts offering astonishing panoramas of the ocean and the glorious Mozambican sunrise and sunset.

wp11

Each suite boasts generous decking with a view, private plunge pools and enormous bedrooms looking out through glass doors to the ocean. The large bathrooms have double vanities and outdoor showers. Soaking in the bath while looking out over the ocean as the moon lifts from the eastern sea must rank as one of the most profoundly inspirational experiences imaginable.

wp4

You should also treat yourself to a luxurious spa treatment in the privacy and comfort of your suite.

Boutique marine experiences

Ponta Mamoli offers an array of exciting marine activities, many of which are not available anywhere else! The whole beach is part of an enormous marine reserve and offers some unique opportunities.

wp6

You can step straight off the beach under the waves and snorkel above the reefs of sealife that abounds in the rock pools and shallows. You might prefer to dive down to the reefs and to enjoy the plethora of gorgeous fish life swimming in amongst the coral. If you are not a diver yet, highly skilled dive instructors will introduce you to wonders of the deep.

wp5

Otherwise you might like to kayak in the open ocean or explore the remote coastline. If it is your bent, you could jump on a deep-sea boat and head out for some of the most spectacular game fishing that this coast has to offer.

wp7

As the day draws to a close, you might like to jog along the limitless coastline before a late afternoon swim – Ponta Mamoli offers you a 99 percent chance that an afternoon or morning swim will be in the company of a pod of dolphins – surfing in the waves next to you. There is also an excellent chance to see migrating humpback whales from July to October – either as you stroll the beach or recline on your deck.

wp10

Back on land, you can explore the verdant coastal bush and beach sands on horseback – galloping through the dune forest paths and up onto the epic ocean view points. Your ride might end with a gallop through the low-tide surf. White Pearl is the only resort in the area with a licence for horses.

wp2

At night you could be lucky enough to see loggerhead and leatherback turtles nesting (December to February) – an experience of primal humility.

wetu-white-pearl-7-36

Fresh friendly service and food

When you wake up, wander over to the White Pearl restaurant where platters of tropical fruits and fresh pastries will fuel you for a day of fun and adventure. After a refreshing snifter at the pool bar savour a light lunch of just-picked salads and light tapas. After an afternoon of exertion or doing nothing at all, your dinner will be a scrumptious Indian Ocean seafood affair, either candlelit on the beach or in the privacy of your suite.

wp8

Please let us know if you have any questions at all about booking a once-in-a-lifetime, African Ocean Safari.

Wanderlust… it’s a thing

“It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.” Anthony Bourdain

Wanderlust. Defined in the dictionary as: a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about… is a thing many of us battle with. But why? It should be a positive thing. Here’s a little something that will help feed that wanderlust inside of you… and perhaps get you dreaming a little more too! Presenting the best #luxurymoments that #Mozambique #Botswana #Zambia and of course #South Africa have to offer.

Deciding on a honeymoon or proposal are two pivotal decisions that you really don’t want to get wrong. They are both very important life events that will literally stay with you for forever!

The Benguela Diamond Safari

Without question one of the world’s most spectacular cities, Cape Town was recently voted the 2014, World Design Capital. Despite being South Africa’s oldest city, Cape Town has managed to retain its traditional charm whilst developing its cosmopolitan lifestyle. This combination ensures a wealth of experiences for tourists and locals’ a-like. Cape Town is undoubtedly a destination in itself but also the honeymooner’s gateway to the African continent.

Visit Cape Town and let Ellerman House take you on an exclusive, handcrafted diamond safari.

di-2

Ellerman House, in partnership with Benguela Diamonds, is offering its guests an exclusive opportunity to embark on a ‘diamond safari’ to the mineral-rich west coast of South Africa – a unique place of origin for diamonds worthy of the most exquisite jewellery settings.

di-3

‘Diamonds are forever’ and are known as ‘a girl’s best friend.’ They are the purest and most brilliant of the earth’s precious gemstones. Investing in a special diamond is not an everyday purchase, which is why this unique trip – the first of its kind in South Africa – has been curated as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Guests get to follow the journey of an ocean diamond from its humble origin beneath the surface of the sea to its transformation into a symbol of love and object of beauty. This exciting new experience, exclusive to Ellerman House guests, is particularly attractive to couples planning an engagement or celebrating an anniversary or milestone in their lives.

Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls

Just because you’re in the bush it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a beautiful, healthy breakfast. And one of my favourite ways to make sure that happens is to plan ahead, and then take food out on the road in pretty little cups or glass jars, just like with these endlessly creamy and delicious Quinoa Breakfast Cups. Also, the recipe works just as well with a few favourite African grain varieties to replace the quinoa. Sorghum and millet are two of my favourite gluten-free options, both giving lots of light fluffiness, and making a perfect blank canvas for the coconut milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Top with mixed roasted nuts or your favourite granola and you’ll have a shiny start to the day indeed.

Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls
Serves 4 | Preparation time 10 minutes | Cooking time 15–20 minutes

Screen-Shot-2015-10-27-at-4.46.12-PM-500x323

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1 cup quinoa (or millet or oats)
1 cup water
1 cup milk, almond milk or coconut milk
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 vanilla pod, sliced length ways
1 cup natural yoghurt or coconut cream
2-3 fresh plums, sliced (or any stone fruit)
½ cup mixed roasted nuts
4 tsp honey or alternative healthy sugar, for serving
Coconut shavings, for serving
Fresh strawberries, for serving

Screen-Shot-2015-11-23-at-5.05.46-PM-500x436

WHAT TO DO
1. Cook the quinoa with the water, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a medium sized saucepan, bring to the boil then simmer for about 15 minutes until cooked. Add a little hot water as it cooks if you find that it becomes too thick, although you are looking for a porridgy consistency.

  1. Lightly toast the coconut shavings in a dry pan over medium heat.
  2. When the quinoa is cooked, layer your breakfast into small glass jars or bowls, dividing and layering the above remaining ingredients between them.

A Day in Paradise

Benguerra Island is the second largest island in the gorgeous Bazaruto archipelago – floating in the shimmering blue of the balmy Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique. 1

If you’ve ever wondered what to expect of a luxury Mozambican holiday…. here’s a quick snapshot of what an average day at AndBeyond Benguerra Island entails:

Wake up well rested in your four-poster bed in your casinha or cabanha nestling in the shade of the lush island forest. Surrounded with a light and airy feel of afro-chic with a taste of Portuguese- Mozambique tradition. The shutters and wooden concertina doors allow your living space to be completely open to the ocean breezes so you literally rise with the sun.

wetu-benguerra-prop-02

Do as much or as little as you like at Benguerra. Start your day with a sunrise boat ride to one of the excellent dive sites off the island where the teaming life beneath the waves will leave you amazed and delighted or take a long walk along the crisp white sand as the sea laps softly beside you.

2

After a leisurely breakfast of fresh fruits or a hearty but elegant fry-up, you might take to the interior of the island to explore the forests and freshwater lakes for the plethora of bird-life that abounds on the island. A visit to a local village to experience the lives of the local islanders is an excellent way to finish the morning.

benguerra-banner-01-1920x810

Under the shade of a 1000 palms take a fresh water swim in the lodge’s rim-flow pool. After a cooling dip you might like to lie back on a lounger and sip on an island cocktail while the gentle ocean breeze lulls you into a pleasant doze.

wetu-benguerra-prop-06

If you are feeling more energetic why not toss a line off a deep-sea fishing boat where some of the best catch and release game fishing in the world awaits.

Then enjoy a delicious private picnic on an isolated dune; relax in peace on the beach or on your veranda. Perhaps a rejuvenating spa treatment would be more to your taste before forty winks.

In the late afternoon, you could paddle out into the ocean on a kayak and look for the rare dugong perhaps accompanied by a pod of confiding dolphin. Otherwise you could blaze down the beach on horseback, the sun setting over Africa to the west. If you fancy something less active, a sunset dhow cruise with your favourite snifter is a glorious way to welcome the stars.

benguerra-content-02

On your return to the lodge, take a long and luxurious bubble bath in your spacious bathroom, complete with views and bathtub for two, it’s an excellent place to unwind after a day of island fun and adventure.

wetu-benguerra-prop-3

Enjoy dinner on the beach, your toes in the sand, a perfectly chilled wine in your hand and an exquisite seafood meal in front of you. If you are looking for a little more romance how about some al fresco dining under the Indian Ocean sky on the sprawling veranda next to your own private plunge pool.

wetu-benguerra-prop-11

Finally let the natural cycle and rhythm of nature take hold of you and slip into a deep sleep to the sounds of the Indian Ocean.

Doesn’t this just sound like the perfect day? For more stunning Mozambican luxury getaways click here.

Iconic Africa – the Who, How, Where and Why?

Every African tale has its beginning, a seed which over time has germinated into something supremely special.

Iconic Africa was merely a dream on a beautiful evening game drive, at the exquisite Londolozi Private Game Reserve. The game ranger, “John” and guest “Terri” had got on swimmingly and both shared an innate passion for the African wilderness. They both yearned to share this incredible infatuation and craved to inspire others to come and experience the beauty of Africa.

Terri Abadi’s uncontainable enthusiasm for Africa – Africa’s wildlife, Africa’s people and Africa’s wild spaces – borders on obsessive. Terri’s favourite way to spend the summer months is on safari with her husband and four children, which she does regularly all the way from Atlanta.

John Holley grew up in Africa. His fervour for conservation and travel was ignited by a childhood spent at the continent’s wilderness hotspots. As a student John spent every minute he could in the wild – travelling and working as a horse safari guide in Kenya. He began his professional career by completing his chartered accountancy for global financial services firm KPMG. Eventually, however, the call of the African wilderness pulled him away from corporate life and off to Londolozi where he worked as a game ranger for two years.

It was here that one day… on another glorious game drive as the sun was setting on a bright crimson horizon, the stars aligned and Iconic Africa was born. John recalls how during Terri’s stay the Londolozi wilderness truly showed off! Each game drive produced life long memories. John and his tracker Richard Siwela laughed as they couldn’t put a foot wrong! Those who have spent a great deal of time in the bush, know this as “bush karma”. It was this incredible game viewing and endless memories which stimulated a life-long friendship and inspired game ranger and guest to start a new adventure. They have formed a compelling partnership with John’s affable charm and knowledge of wildlife, perfectly complimenting Terri’s love, enthusiasm and desire to get her feet rooted firmly in the African soil.

Founded by Terri (based in Atlanta, Georgia) in 2013, Iconic Africa is a labour of love designed to entice global travellers to African destinations that have inspired her over a lifetime of travel to our great continent. She has personally visited every destination that Iconic Africa recommends and used this extensive luxury travel experience to mould Iconic Africa into one of the leading bespoke travel agencies for exclusive, luxury and adventure African safaris and expeditions.

In December of 2014, Terri and John joined forces to transform a traditional travel agency into a world-beating online travel platform. To showcase the Iconic African destinations which best represent Iconic Africa’s values of opulent luxury, world-beating African hospitality, delectable contemporary cuisine and most importantly an authentic commitment to wilderness conservation.

Iconic Africa creates exclusive luxury African safari and adventure holidays for couples and families to southern and eastern Africa. Our gorgeous destinations are all handpicked and visited by Terri and John and include: the sophistication of Cape Town, the glorious Cape Winelands of the Franschhoek Valley, the tumultuous Atlantic coastal retreat of Hermanus, the most stylish safaris of the Kruger National Park, the emerald mosaic and epic wildlife of the Okavango Delta and Selinda Game Reserve, the adventure and majesty of the Victoria Falls, the last tropical island refuges floating in the cobalt blue of Mozambique and the urban fascination and history of Johannesburg – economic hub of the African continent

A vital aspect of Iconic Africa’s philosophy is that the destinations we represent must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the conservation of Africa’s last great wilderness areas and the rural people who live around them. Terri and John have both personally been extensively involved in education and poverty alleviation in rural Africa.

Long before Terri involved herself in the luxury travel and safari industry, she owned two successful American fashion companies which she used as leverage to build an export business that shipped innovative children’s products back to South Africa.

John’s vision and fervour for the development of Africa’s people began with the Madlala Cluster Learning Centre in a village bordering the Kruger National Park. John helped to start this rural centre for African learning excellence in a village while working at Londolozi, still growing from strength to strength under the Good Work Foundation. When you travel with Iconic Africa, you can rest assured that a portion of the money you spend on life-changing African vacation will be put to wilderness conservation and the alleviation of poverty in Africa. Our destinations contribute to the protection of rhino, innovative green energy, valuable ecological research, education, lion conservation and community development.
