Traveller Review – Giorgio De Luca

Iconic Africa Traveller Giorgio De Luca has just returned home after a wonderful time in the Okavango and Victoria Falls. Giorgio was kind enough to chat to us about his trip and share some of his awesome photographs with us. Here’s what he had to say:
What did you think of the Okavango as a safari destination?
It remains my best destination in Africa for safari though I do have the impression that the numbers of animals as drastically reduced in the last 20 years.
What was your favourite thing about Victoria Falls?
We were unlucky with the weather and the falls with too much water (as expected for the season). The walking tour along the falls is my favourite experience, even better that the heli flight, because you feel the impressive power of the water! I’d also like to mention the good dinner and friendly ambiance created by the crew on board of the Sunset Cruise.
What was your most unforgettable moment?
Probably the photo shooting of the leopard. I looked like a staged scene for National Geographic but it was real i.e. the leopard, a magnificent sun-set, the leopard jumping on the branch perfectly exposed…
If you could describe your trip in one word what would it be?
Rewarding
What was the best sighting of your trip?
See above plus the sunset on the pond with the hippos in the background.
Where in Africa would you like to go next?
Never done Ethiopia and Rwanda (Gorillas)
Thank you Giorgio for sharing your incredible pictures and stories – we hope to see you back on African soil again soon!

Victoria Falls – When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls

When David Livingstone first saw the miracle that is the Victoria Falls he wrote that upon this incredible sight “angels in their flight must have gazed.” This natural wonder is a sight to be seen… and one for every traveller’s bucket-list. Here are a few tips on when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls:

when is the best time to visit victoria falls

When is the best time to go Victoria Falls: Quick facts

Best time to go to Vic Falls: July to October (Good water levels over the falls & great adventure activities)
Busy Season: July to October (Victoria Falls can get crowded)
Quiet Season: November to April (A quieter time at Victoria Falls but spectacular for adventure activities)
Best Weather: April, May and September (Pleasant temperatures; afternoon rains are rare and seldom interfere with your safari)
Worst Weather: October to February (Very hot; December to February are the wet weather months)

May to June – High Flow

The Victoria Falls or what the locals call “the smoke that thunders” is at their fullest and most impressive between May to June. This high flow season most definitely gives the most awe-inspiring view. The full curtain of water stretches the whole width of the Zambezi. The sheer volume of water is jaw-stopping and thunderous roar and fine mist reaches for miles. Do be careful with your cameras in the mist of the rainforest… you may need to purchase a poncho to keep it dry.

October and November – Low Flow

Flow is at its lowest in the dry season resulting in narrower streams of water flowing over the rock wall. Although the actual falls may not be as remarkable, tourists are able to get closer to the edge and visibility is improved. As a result you are likely to get much better photos than during high flow. If you are an adrenalin junkie… this is a great time to live on the edge and take a refreshing yet heart-stopping swim in Devil’s Pool. The sparse vegetation also makes wildlife spotting much easier and game drives far more thrilling.

July to September – The Interim

This transitional flow can also be an incredible time to visit Victoria Falls. The lower water volume and less mist allows for breathtaking views and incredible rafting conditions. White-water rafting, definitely something for the adventurers bucket-list! Whether you are bravely paddling through a rapid, holding on to the rope for dear life or bouncing around in the white water this is an experience to remember!

Wanderlust… it’s a thing

“It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.” Anthony Bourdain

Wanderlust. Defined in the dictionary as: a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about… is a thing many of us battle with. But why? It should be a positive thing. Here’s a little something that will help feed that wanderlust inside of you… and perhaps get you dreaming a little more too! Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls

Just because you’re in the bush it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a beautiful, healthy breakfast. And one of my favourite ways to make sure that happens is to plan ahead, and then take food out on the road in pretty little cups or glass jars, just like with these endlessly creamy and delicious Quinoa Breakfast Cups. Also, the recipe works just as well with a few favourite African grain varieties to replace the quinoa. Sorghum and millet are two of my favourite gluten-free options, both giving lots of light fluffiness, and making a perfect blank canvas for the coconut milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Top with mixed roasted nuts or your favourite granola and you’ll have a shiny start to the day indeed.

Beautiful Quinoa Breakfast Bowls
Serves 4 | Preparation time 10 minutes | Cooking time 15–20 minutes

Screen-Shot-2015-10-27-at-4.46.12-PM-500x323

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1 cup quinoa (or millet or oats)
1 cup water
1 cup milk, almond milk or coconut milk
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 vanilla pod, sliced length ways
1 cup natural yoghurt or coconut cream
2-3 fresh plums, sliced (or any stone fruit)
½ cup mixed roasted nuts
4 tsp honey or alternative healthy sugar, for serving
Coconut shavings, for serving
Fresh strawberries, for serving

Screen-Shot-2015-11-23-at-5.05.46-PM-500x436

WHAT TO DO
1. Cook the quinoa with the water, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a medium sized saucepan, bring to the boil then simmer for about 15 minutes until cooked. Add a little hot water as it cooks if you find that it becomes too thick, although you are looking for a porridgy consistency.

  1. Lightly toast the coconut shavings in a dry pan over medium heat.
  2. When the quinoa is cooked, layer your breakfast into small glass jars or bowls, dividing and layering the above remaining ingredients between them.

Traveller Review – David du Bois

Recent traveller David du Bois had an unforgettable time in Victoria Falls and Nkaya lodge. We caught up with him after he returned home to touch base. He took some incredible pictures of what the locals call ‘Mosi oa Tunya,’ The Smoke that Thunders, and was kind enough to share them with us.

vic falls

How did you go about planning your trip?

David: “Along with SAA vacations, I found Iconic Africa on the internet.  I usually plan my own trips, but thought I’d be a bit out of my league trying to plan logistics around Africa.  I just didn’t want to deal with it. I took a massive leap of faith in contacting Iconic Africa -since I’d never heard of you before- and having your team plan the trip.  Once the trip was planned, it was hard telling how good or bad it might be based on the pictures of the properties.”

IMG_6724

What did you think of the safari experience?

David: “We were absolutely blown away by how awesome the entire experience was.  Our lodging, guides, transfers, everything went very smoothly and exceeded our expectations.  We were extraordinary happy with the accommodations at N’kaya.  Only 8 guests stay at a time, and we had the place to ourselves for the first two nights.  The staff spoiled us. On the subsequent days, the owners showed up with corporate guests.  They were all delightful, I think we made some lifelong local South African friends.”

0C2A0915

What did you enjoy the most about your trip?

David: “We really enjoyed how Bev would check us into our flights, it was comforting to know that we were on her radar. Bev even alerted N’kaya that it was Brenda’s birthday, and we had a most memorable celebration as a result.”

royalromance-banner-04

Any parting words?

David: “Thanks Again.  We will certainly highly recommend Iconic Africa to our friends, who now have a great interest in going to Africa because of our social media posts!”

Thank you David for taking the time to chat to us – we hope to welcome you back to African soil again soon.

Traveller Review – Atholl and Carol Robertson

Iconic Africa recently had the pleasure of welcoming Atholl and Carol Robertson to our beautiful continent.  We had a chat to them once they were back home to see how it went.  They had a wonderful trip and were even treated to a once-in-a-lifetime leopard and sable encounter which they kindly recounted for us below.

Botswana-Safari-Okavango-Safari-Leopard-Banner-3

Tell us about the leopard and sable encounter?

Atholl: “Initially we saw a sable and its approximately week-old offspring walking alone, we then saw about 50 metres behind it a leopard slowly stalking. The mother saw the leopard and immediately made a lot of noise as both ran into thicker grass. Baby sable then hid in the grass whilst mother attempted to get the leopard to have a go at herself. The leopard showed no interest so the mother scampered away never to be seen again. The leopard then patrolled around looking for the baby sable but to no avail. After about 10 minutes patrolling the leopard climbed a tree and sat there looking out. After a while the baby sable stood up – not its best decision – down comes the leopard, slowly creeps to target pounces and kills. All within about 20 – 30 metres of us! We then closed in to witness the sad end which was a pity to watch but that is nature.”

What did you think of South Africa?

Atholl: “It is very striking, beautiful scenery, very friendly people and at no time did I feel unsafe. Great service at all venues and for us all services worked very efficiently.”

MN-10

What was your favourite place?

Atholl: “Very hard in fact too hard sorry – oh all right… Londolozi!”

ebonylodge-content-01

What was your most memorable moment?

Atholl: “ There were so many but I guess probably the sable kill closely followed by watching 3 male lions walk past our Landrover!

dithaba-content-02

What did you think of the people?

Atholl: “Very friendly and thoughtful with great attention to detail.

Did you enjoy the food?

Atholl: “We were most impressed with the food in particular at Royal Chundu.”

royalchundu-banner-02

What tips would you give future travellers?

Atholl: “Use Iconic Africa! Check the weather more carefully so you don’t lug around too many clothes.

Thank you Atholl and Carol for taking the time to chat to us! We are so glad that you had an awesome time and that you had such an unforgettable sighting. We hope to see you back on African soil again soon.

Up Close and Personal with The Elephant Camp

“I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant is faithful one hundred percent.” Dr. Seuss

_MG_7551

One of the most incredible places to really get to know and understand these exquisite animals is The Elephant Camp, Victoria Falls. ele 1

The Elephant Camp, ten scenic kilometres from the town of Victoria Falls, is ideally placed for solitude and seclusion and the myriad sights, adventures and pleasures that this Zimbabwean wonderland has to offer. In the distance, the golden-grey spray of the Victoria Falls also know as “The Smoke that Thunders,” presents an impossibly majestic backdrop to the ultimate African adventure.

ele 4

The camp exudes an all-encompassing Victorian atmosphere with luxurious modern comforts. In the main lounge area, shining brass chandeliers, strung from the airy canvas tent, cast a gorgeous golden light on the exquisite Victorian sofas, chairs and detailed finishes. The lounge is sublime sanctuary while the lofted deck open to the wonder of the Zambezi gorge and the mist of the falls is an excellent place to contemplate nature and the earth.

ele 2

The Elephant Camp offers you the humbling and inspirational chance to feed, touch and interact with elephants. The energy of these intuitive and magnificent giants will touch your soul. At dawn, when the spray of the falls shines in the rising sun, one of these confiding behemoths will take you onto her back and convey you along the ancient game paths that traverse the precipitous edges of the Zambezi gorge in the Victoria Falls National Park.
For the adventurous, plunging into the gorge, and probably the swirling waters too is an excellent option. White water rafting through the rolling, bubbling rapids of the Zambezi – on a raft, a kayak or boogie board – will leave you breathless, exhilarated and humbled by the unfathomable power of mother nature.

In the evening, as the edge of the African heat dissipates and the shadows of the Mopane and Baobab trees lengthen, a picturesque river cruise on the calm Zambezi waters above the falls is the perfect way to contemplate the soul-searching power and majesty of Africa.

ELE 5

Daily scheduled flights into Victoria Falls Airport make travel from Johannesburg, Harare or Windhoek (four days a week) simple and convenient. From the charming little Victoria Falls Airport, it is a scenic 40 minute trip in an air-conditioned shuttle to The Elephant Camp.

The awe-inspiring Zambezi gorge and the intimate contact with the ancient energy of elephants make The Elephant Camp an epic destination. It’s a bastion of Victorian opulence in the untamed splendour and intimidating power of Victoria Falls.

If you are a fan of these graceful creatures don’t miss out on this! Let us book your once-in-a-lifetime elephant experience now.

Victoria Falls – Choosing Sides

Victoria Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world and one that should most definitely be on that bucket list of yours.

The Falls sit directly on the Zambezi River which is also the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia and so it is often difficult to decide which side to visit or to stay on.

As we have a patriotic Zimbabwean in our midst we may be slightly biased however we will do our best shot to give you a fair comparison!

Zimbabwe

  • Definitely offers the most iconic view of the falls with 75% of the world wonder visible. (This is quite a view as the mighty Zambezi River plunges 93m down a rock face)
  • 16 different viewpoints within a beautiful tropical rainforest
  • An exquisite rainforest where true to its name it rains 24hrs, 365 days of the year, from the falling spray created by the powerful Falls
  • The water flows all year round
  • Loads of fun exciting and extreme activities on offer for the adrenalin junkies out ther
  • The Hotels are relatively cheaper than the Zambian side due to lower government levies and taxes.
  • Most hotels are easily accessible and within walking distance of the Falls
  • Victoria Falls is much smaller than Livingstone (on the Zambian side)
  • Exceptional game viewing in the Victoria Falls National Park, Hwange and Mana Pools
  • For almost 80 km’s the banks of the river are remain natural and overflowing with wildlife as development upstream of the Falls has been carefully controlled.
  • Although Zimbabwe has had some negative publicity in the last decade it really and truly is a beautiful and safe destination – and I can assure you that the people will wow you with their kindness and charm from the minute you arrive

royalromance-banner-04

Zambia

  • From the Zambian side you can only properly see a quarter of the Falls (the Eastern Cataract)
  • There are some activities that you can only do on the Zambian side such as Devil’s Pool. (a section right at the top of the Falls that has pools you can swim in) Only for a crazy few and only in the dry season. Other activities that you can only do from the Zambian side are Micro light flights and Livingstone Island Tours.
  • Exceptionally close-up views of the waterfalls
  • There is no rainforest
  • In the height of the dry season the eastern cataract has been known to dry up completely.
  • Prices on the Zambian side are slightly higher but there are some incredible spots right on the river.
  • Game viewing in Mosi-Oa-Tunya, South Luangwa or the Lower Zambezi National Parks
  • The town of Livingstone is approximately 10kms from the Falls

luxsafariclassic-banner-02

Remember you can cross over the border so if you have time you can still see both and it is definitely worth a trek over the bridge!

Wining and dining at Royal Chundu is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The team of chefs, under Chef and Food & Beverage Manager Sungani Phiri, take great pride in preparing dishes that mirror the rich heritage of the region and the hospitality of the Zambian people.

“We use ingredients that are truly Zambian and weave them through our cuisine.” Says Sungani Phiri. While the presentation is international in appearance, the Zambian flavour is present in every meal: from the berry-smoked quail (grown locally at the local village school), to poached seasonal cumquats, to watermelon (a local specialty) and feta salad, to spinach creamed with ground peanuts, a staple Zambian crop. The lodge purchases fresh fish, such as bream, from local fishermen.

The lodge kitchens recycle all biodegradable waste which is used as compost for the on-site, organic vegetable garden. In addition, that lodge has their own free-range chickens and fresh eggs every morning. All water is recycled and purified on the premises.

Where the Idea Came From

Recently Sungani introduced the Zambian tasting menu to the dining experience at Royal Chundu. “The Zambian tasting menu started as a joke with my sister Thandi who spoke about how it didn’t make sense to celebrate other internationally recognized cuisines based on vast amount of ingredients that our beautiful country has to offer.  Everyone has a cuisine, the French, the German and everyone else around the world, we needed something truly Zambian.  The Tasting menu is a true representation of Zambian culture,” says Sungani.

Royal Chundu Zambian Cultural Tasting Menu by Sungani Phiri

Chibwantu Cocktail

A welcoming drink “aperitif” that is served in homes, it is made from small mealie rice.  The perception of this cocktail is to create an essence that it stayed overnight and fermented.  The important ingredient is the chibwantu root that you soak in the porridge made of the above mealie rice.  This is a drink mostly enjoyed by the indigenous Tonga people who were the first settlers in Zambia.

Impwa Tart with Peri Peri Sauce

Impwa “golden egg” is a vegetable which tastes more like aubergine and is grown and eaten widely in Zambia.  Our version of an amuse bouche! It is cooked the Zambian way with tomato and onion and a slight twist is the addition of orange, feta cheese and the Sauvignon Blanc placed on a peri peri sauce.

Trio of Fish with Mundambi Jelly

Being situated on the Zambezi River and having fish on the menu is obvious as it is always available.  Bream is what most homes in Zambia prefer because it is not full of bones and is very versatile.  The three different methods we use to cook the Zambezi bream are pan frying, poaching and braising with a white wine for the dry bream served with sweet and sour mundambi puree and mundambi jelly which is extracted during the boiling process of this indigenous Lozi vegetable.  Aside from the common fresh fish that is used in this dish, dry fish is a preservation method commonly practiced in Zambia.

Organic “Village” Chicken Ravioli with Rape Salad

Free range organic chicken that is found everywhere around Zambia both rural and urban is a delicacy in every home.  Traditionally when one visits, a chicken is prepared for you as a form of welcome and appreciation.

Protein Happiness with Nshima & Spinach Puree

Protein happiness, the name explains itself as it is a selection of five different local ingredients on one of which is known as Zambian polony “chikanda”.  The other four being smoked local beef, venison stew, venison lolly pop and visashi “spinach in pounded groundnuts” and finished off with local caramelized greens and our staple food which is Nshima.  Nshima is made from maize meal or in Zambia it is called mealie-meal, every home in Zambia depends on this meal, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Sour Milk Cheese Cake with Musika (Tamarind) Jelly.

Normally in Zambian homes typical desert would be left over nshima which would be slightly mashed, add sugar and sour milk “mabisi”.  From an international aspect, they have balanced the biscuit base with a sour milk filling & then added a sweet & sour twist with tamarind jelly & tamarind sorbet.
