Saseka Tented Camp: Where Light Learns to Behave

Some lodges borrow from the bush. Saseka seems to collaborate with it.

Sitting on the banks of the Monwana River in Thornybush, Saseka is one of those rare camps where architecture stops being a backdrop and starts participating in the safari itself. The tents — if one can call them tents without stretching the definition to its upper limit — are floating canopies of patterned shade, soft fabric, and impossibly photogenic angles. It’s as if someone stitched together dappled sunlight and suspended it overhead.

Step inside and you’re met with a design language that’s both bold and quiet. Monochrome palettes soften into warm wood textures; sculptural furniture curves in the same rhythms as the surrounding bushwillows. Your suite feels less like a room and more like a mood — one that shifts subtly throughout the day as the Klaserie light moves across the floor.

But for all its glamour, Saseka doesn’t forget where it is. Just beyond the glass, nyalas graze with the casual entitlement of animals who know they were here first. Elephants drift along the riverbed, pausing occasionally to give you a glance that feels mildly evaluative. The wilderness is close, unavoidable, and deeply grounding.

Game drives around Thornybush offer the classic Lowveld cast: lions on the prowl, leopards draped over the branches they pretend they chose purely for functionality, and rhinos that seem carved from the earth itself. The guiding teams weave expertise with ease — the kind of quiet professionalism that makes sightings feel earned rather than orchestrated.

Evenings at Saseka are a small study in atmosphere. Lantern-lit pathways, the hum of insects, dinner served beneath a sky that feels too generous with its stars. And, of course, that unmistakable sense of being wrapped in design without ever feeling removed from the wild.

Saseka is safari reimagined — an ode to clean lines, good light, and the gentle art of letting the wilderness take centre stage while still offering you a front-row seat.

Special Offer at No.1 African Safari Lodge

The More Family Collection has long been associated with outstanding safari experiences.

Their lodges, boutique hotels and private residences are found in Southern Africa’s best leisure destinations, and combine to offer you the classic Southern African experience, with the More Family Collection’s signature ‘golden thread’ running through them.

Monwana Game Lodge in Thornybush Nature Reserve embodies the spirit of homecoming, and encourages a deep connection to nature, and is now on special at the amazing price of R10 500 pppn sharing! An offer like this doesn’t come around every day…

Monwana was recently voted the No.1 Safari Lodge in Africa by the Travel & Leisure Reader’s Survey, an accolade we heartily endorse!

Thornybush is part of the Greater Kruger National Park, and is unfenced from the 20 000 square kilometre wilderness.
The 14 000ha although concession upon which the lodge is found is literally teeming with wildlife. Elephants parade past the lodge’s waterhole, leopards rasp from the riverbed at night, and from the deck of your suite or the comfort of the main lodge area, you can watch the best of Africa passing by throughout the day.

Four spacious suites accommodate two guests each, and all offer beautiful views from their private shaded decks. Birdwatch from the comfort of a lounger whilst the sun is high, or cool off in your plunge pool (which is heated to beat the coldest months of winter).
Underfloor heating within the rooms themselves and heated towel rails take the edge of the crispness of winter, and the high quality of linen, dressing gowns and towels will leave you feeling exquisitely pampered.

In addition to the four suites, two family suites which can accommodate up to five guests are available. These are ideal for families with older children (reserve policy stipulates a minimum age of ten), as the secondary bedroom features twin beds, and an extra one can easily be added.

The Private safari vehicle that comes with each family suite ensures that your bush adventures flow with your own rhythm. Come back later if needs be or head out earlier in the afternoon to maximise your bush time…
It’ll just be you on board, so spend as long as you want admiring all of nature’s aspects, without the pressure of fitting in with the needs of others.

In an industry already flush with exceptional safari experiences, Monwana is truly special. You will instantly feel at home there, and there are few places that will have you getting that in touch with nature that quickly.

Serondella: at Home in the African Bush

It’s rare to find a lodge where every luxurious comfort is available to you, yet you feel as completely at ease as though it were your own home. That is the overwhelming feeling you get when staying at Serondella Lodge in the Thornybush Private Game Reserve.
It’s the heart of Big 5 country – which is probably completely unlike home – but warm smiles greet you whichever way you turn, all your needs are more than met, and the relaxed atmosphere of the place somehow makes it feel as though you’ve been there for years.

And the game-viewing!

The Thornybush Reserve in which Serondella is situated borders on the world-famous Kruger Park, so there is no shortage of wildlife. Elephants rumble past the lodge at all hours of the day, the roar of a lion is an almost constant serenade from dusk until dawn, and all manner of other creatures abound in this diverse landscape of over 14000 ha.

Open-topped safari vehicles offer visitors an almost unrivalled wildlife-experience, as the animals in the reserve have become completely accustomed to their presence, and go about their business as if the vehicles were not even there.

Serondella is an intimate lodge, providing two private suites and two family suites with lounges, viewing decks & plunge pools. Each suite is air-conditioned and has WiFi, and a convenient Nespresso machine in each will provide you with that early morning caffeine boost needed when the alarm goes off for the dawn game drive.

The lodge is all about families, and the family suites emphasise comfort and convenience for both parents and children. Two bedrooms, a shared living area, a private kitchen, an outside deck, and a plunge pool offer a place for loved ones to feel at home together.

A rim-flow pool sunk into the main viewing deck provides the perfect place from which to view the wildlife drinking at the busy waterhole below camp, whilst a boma and fire pit with their attending bar allow one to enjoy dinner and drinks under the stars, weather-permitting of course…

Willem’s Den is another accommodation option; a self-contained suite for larger families offering space, privacy, and comfort with three bedrooms and bathrooms, a kitchen, lounge, private garden, verandah, boma and plunge pool. This is the perfect place to accommodate different generations in a home-like environment.

Serondella is the perfect lodge for smaller groups or a family on safari.

Saseka: Jewel in the Thornybush Crown

Saseka Tented Camp is currently running a flash SADC sale not to be missed!

Location, location, location!

The go-to phrase of any knowledgable real-estate developer. Where something is built is just as important as the building itself.
Fortunately, in the case of the Thornybush collection of lodges, they have Location taken care of!

The Thornybush Private Game Reserve is set in Big 5 Heaven in South Africa’s Lowveld, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. The northern reaches of the Drakensberg mountains lie to the west and are silhouetted at sunset each evening, and all around you the bush is teeming with wildlife.
Saseka Tented Camp – which the Thornybush Collection themselves feel is like the jewel in their crown – is perched overlooking a picturesque riverbed, underneath the shade of ancient riparian trees that for decades have provided refuge for an untold number of animals from the hot African sun for decades.

Saseka is the local word for “beautiful”, and a more appropriate name could not have been chose for this elegantly laid out camp that merges perfectly with the contours of the surrounding bush and the dappled light cast upon it.
Nine luxurious tented suites with stylish interiors, sweeping decks, private pools and uninterrupted views of the seasonal Monwana riverbed provide luxurious oases where guests can savour the joys of the wilderness in comfort.

The wildlife experience of the Thornybush Reserve is one of the best in Africa. Multiple lion prides call this part of the world their home, the resident leopards slink through the undergrowth and are encountered regularly. Elephants march sedately along the riverbed below the camp and birdsong is a constant ambience during the day, whether you are lounging on deck or out on safari.

With the unbeatable SADC special running until mid-December, this is the time to be getting there.
